1. Background of the Digital Lin Chao Geomuseum

1.1. ¡°Digital Lin Chao Geomuseum¡± £¬the Follow Up Action of the 100th Anniversary of the Geographical Society of China (1909-2009), Preparison Meeting was Held in April 2011 in Beijing

As the follow up action of the 100th Anniversary of the Geographical Society of China (1909-2009), a proposal of establishing an open geographical knowledge environment by building the Digital Lin Chao Geomuseum was discussed at the special meeting on 29th April 2011 in Beijing. More than 20 experts from research institutes and universities participated the meeting. Common understandings were reached: an open geographical knowledge environment was important and necessary for geographical research, education and broad society both in China and the world else; it should be a most practical way to establish a digital geomuseum named with Professor Lin Chao, Pioneer of Chinese geographers in IGU (International Geographical Union); the Geographical Society of China should play a leading and coordinating role at this action; Peking University, Institute of Geographical Sciences and Natural Resources Research, Institute of Remote Sensing Applications, Chinese Academy of Sciences, government of Jieyang City, Guangdong Province would like to be the partners at this action; more practical preparation for establishing the Digital Lin Chao Geomuseum should start then . 1.2. Prof. Rao Zongyi (Jao Tsung-I), Giant of Sinology, grants calligraphy to the Digital Lin Chao Geomusuem in July 2011
 
Prof. Rao Zongyi (Jao Tsung-I), Professor of the University of Hong Kong, University of Singapore, Yale University, Academia Sinica, Chinese University of Hong Kong, is the Giant of Sinology, he grants calligraphy to the Digital Lin Chao Geomusuem in July 2011. Rao Zongyi' remarkable achievements and outstanding contribution made him as renowned Master in and outside of China. His achievements fields include Chinese History, literature, language, Painting, Calligraphy, Chu ci, Biography, Buddhism, Dunhuang studies, ancient philology, archaeology,Paleography, epigraphy, classical literature, Chinese literature and art history, music history, art history, history of religion, history of Sino-Indian relations, Chinese and foreign cultural exchange history, and comparative cultures between easter and wester histories.

Professor Jao's academic achievements and contributions have won him numerous awards and honours. He has been awarded the Prix Stanislas Julien by the Academie des Inscriptions et Belles-lettres, Institute de France, and was the first Chinese to receive an honorary degree in humanities by the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes in France. He is a Member of the Bhandarkar Oriental Institute in Poona, India; Fellow of Ecole Francaise d'Extreme-Orient; Honorary Member of the Societe Asiatique, France; Honorary Research Fellow of the Dunhuang Research Institute, China; Adviser of the Research Centre of Ancient Civilization, Peking University; Consultant, Research Bureau of Ancient Scripts, State Council of China; and Adviser of the Institute of Literature and Philosophy, Academia Sinica, Taiwan. For his remarkable work in promoting the arts and culture, he has received many prestigious awards including the Order of Arts and Letters, Ministry of Culture of France, the Grand Bauhinia Medal, and a Prize for Special Contributions to the Protection of Dunhuang Relics.The Geographical Society of China and the Lin Chao Geomusuem are very honored to have Rao 's calligraphy with his full signature in his 95 year old. 1.4. The 31st WGISS/CEOS Plenary Discussed the Proposal from Prof. Liu Chuang, Co-User Vice Chair, that WGISS Could be a Partner of the Digital Geomuseum, Dr. Parknor Amphant, Chair of the WGISS/CEOS, Agreed to be the Representative of WGISS to Join the Steering Committee of the New Platform

 
The 31st Plenary Meeting of Working Group of Information System and Services, Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (WGISS/CEOS) was held from 13-17 June 2011 in EROS/ USGS, USA. The meeting discussed WGISS five year plan from 2012-2016 and actions of each tasks. Prof. Liu Chuang, Co- User Vice Chair, suggested WGISS to support the digital geomuseum which focuses on the dimension of earth observation and research history. Dr. Parkorn Amphnant, Chair of WGISS/ CEOS, will join the Steering Committee of the Digital Lin Chao Geomuseum on behalf of WGISS/CEOS¡£More.........
1.5. Joint Project Workshop of Science Council of Asia (SCA) and CODATA Task Group on Preservation of and Access to Scientific Data in Developing Countries on Open Knowledge Environment in Asia was held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, partners agreed to encourage the digital geomuseum to be one of the cases of OKE in Asia
 

The Science Council of Asia (SCA), the CODATA Task Group on Preservation of and Access to Scientific Data in Developing Counties (PASDDC/CODATA), the Working Group on Information Systems and Services of the Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (WGISS/CEOS) and the GIS and Remote Sensing Laboratory of the National University of Mongolia (NUM) jointly organized an interna-tional workshop on Open Knowledge and Data Environment for Innovative Research, Education and Society (OKDE) in Asia during July 4-6, 2011 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. The objec-tives of the workshop were: (1) to enhance the common understan-ding of the principles and guidelines of OKDE for Innovation Research, Education and Society in Asia; (2) to present progress on OKDE from each of partners; and (3) to prototype joint efforts on the OKDE platform ¨C Digital Geo-Museum Network of Asia.The Digital Lin Chao Geomuseum will play important role at OKDE project.

1.6. Prof. Liu Chuang Presented the Framework of the Digital Geomuseum at the First Conference of the World Data System in Kyoto, Japan; She Demonstrated that the Museum Should Play a Special Role to Earth Science Research, Education and Society in the Integrated and Historical Dimensions

The 1st ICSU World Data System Conference, Global Data for Global Science, was held from September 3-6, 2011 at Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan. 155 experts from 22 countries participated the conference. The new ICSU World Data System (WDS) has been created through a decision of the 29th General Assembly of the International Council for Science (ICSU). WDS builds on the 50-year legacy of the ICSU World Data Centre system (WDC) and the ICSU Federation of Astronomical and Geophysical data-analysis Services.
 

The WDS will support ICSU's mission and objectives, ensuring the long-term stewardship and provision of quality-assessed data and data services to the international science community and other stakeholders.Prof. Liu Chuang provided a presentation on Digital Geomuseum - An Open Knowledge and Data Environment for Innovative Research, Education and Society. She, as the ICSU Transition Team Member of World Data Center to World Data System,congratulations to the WDS for the new system successfully established. 1.7 The Geographical Society of China Delegation Visited Professor Rao Zongyi in Hong Kong for Expressing GSC¡¯s Thanks and Best Wishes

The Geographical Society of China Delegation led by Prof. Bao Jigang, Vice President of Geographical Society of China and President Assistant of Sun Yat-sen University, Visited Professor Rao Zongyi in Hong Kong on 12 September 2011 for Expressing GSC¡¯s Thanks for his contribution to the Digital Lin Chao Geomuseum, Prof. Liu Chuang, Chair of Executive Committee of Digital Lin Chao Geomuseum, Prof. Lin Hui, Director of Institute of Space and Earth Information Science, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Prof. Yue Zhongqi, Professor of University of Hong Kong, Mr. Lin Junsheng,, Mr. Lin Yongxin, Secretary General and Officer of Jieyang Government, Guangdong Province jointed the visiting team. The Workshop on Open Knowledge Environment in Developing Countries was held at the 6th Internet Governance Forum (IGF) from 27-30 September 2011 in Nairobi, Kenney. 2011Äê9ÔÂ27-30ÈÕ. More than 30 experts in sciences, politics and technology from Switzerland, Norway, Portugal, Kenney Russia, Egypt joined the workshop. Chinese Association for Science and Technology (CAST), Internet Society of China, CODTA Task Group of Preservation of and Access to Scientific Data in Developing Countries (PASDDC/CODATA), Global Alliance for Enhancing Access to and Application of Scientific Data in Developing Countries (e-SDDC), UN GAID jointly organized the workshop. The 5th US-China Roundtable on Scientific Data Cooperation was Held from 27-28 October 2011 in Beijing. Dr. Ronald F.Able, President of IGU and Chair of US Delegation, and Prof. Guo Huadong, President of CODATA and Chair of China Delegation jointly chaired the meeting. Prof. Liu Chuang presented the proposed action plan for the Digital Lin Chao Geomuseum. The potential cooperation between USA and China on the digital geomuseum was discussed at the meeting. 2. The Digital Lin Chao Geomuseum Initiative Launch

The LETTER OF INTEREST was signed by Dr.Ronald Abler, President of IGU, Prof. GUO Huadongm President of CODATA and Dr. LIU Yanhua, President of GSC on 30 October 2011 in Beijing.

CODATA mission is to strengthen international science for the benefit of society by promoting improved scientific and technical data management and use. IGU mission is to promote the study of geographical problems. The Geographical Society of China is the largest organization dedicated to serving the community of Chinese geographers and plays the leading role in developing the Digital Lin Chao Geomuseum. CODATA and IGU are willing to work in joint partnership to enhance the open availability and use of public scientific data worldwide. As part of these efforts, we, the undersigned, are interested in joint efforts to encourage the development the Digital Lin Chao Geomuseum as a not-for-profit open knowledge environment for the benefit of innovative research and education for geography and the broader society. 2.3. Remarks by International Geographical Union President Ronald F. Abler at the launch of the Digital Lin Chao Geomuseum. Beijing, Peoples Republic of China, 30 October 2011.

Today we launch the Digital Lin Chao Geomuseum Initiative. That name commemorates and memorializes one of the giants of Chinese and international geography. Lin Chao, Professor of Peking University, was born in 1909 and died in 1991. He accomplished much during a long and exceptionally full career that spanned great and disruptive changes in China, and more than minor changes in his chosen discipline. He led the Chinese geographical community into the International Geographical Union in 1949. . ........

I believe he is well pleased to have this ceremony held in conjunction with CODATA¡¯s forty-fifth anniversary, not only much of his work relied on the careful analysis of sound data, but a new milestone of opening digital geographical knowledge and data in the information society. .

2.4. Prof. Zheng Du, Chair of the Steering Committee of the Digital Lin Chao Geomuseum, Claims that It Is a New Platform for Promoting and Learning Geography

Mr. Lin Chao is one of the great masters in creating and leading China's geography from modern to contemporary geography in China. He made most outstanding contributions in so broad fields of geography, including geographical theory and methodology, integrated physical geography, historical geography, geographical education, as well as the international cooperation between China and the world else. On behalf of Institute of Geography of China, he submitted China¡¯s application to join the International Geographical Union (IGU) at the 16th International Congress of IGU in 1949 in Portugal, when the General Assembly of IGU made decision to accept China to be a member of IGU. The great progress of China in IGU family in most resent years is inseparable from Prof. Lin Chao¡¯s contribution on it. The Digital Lin Chao Geomuseum will integrate the special charm of geography, technology of Internet, and the most valuable heritages of history and culture together; it will open to all with the digital geomuseum methodology.

 
The Digital Lin Chao Geomuseum will record the historical contributions from Chinese geographers in exploring the earth and geographical sciences, the museum will demonstrate the geo-diversity with full color in multi-culture and arts, as well as the historical achievements of how human to discovery and to know its environment and the changes in rules I believe that the Digital Lin Chao Geomuseum will be a new platform for learning geographical knowledge, promoting geographical spirit and enjoy geography all; it will also play a special and unique role in enhancing exchanges for the rich and colorful multi-culture in the world!£¨More....£©

The First Plenary of Digital Lin Chao Geomuseum was held on 31st October 2011 in the Institute of Geographical Sciences and Natural Resources Research, Chinese Academy of Science. The representatives of the partners, Steering Committee and Executive Committee of the team participated the meeting. Dr. Ronald Abler, President of IGU and Prof. Fu Bojie, Vice President of Geographical Society of China presented the certificates of each partners and experts. The Development Plan, as well as the policy of the Digital Lin Chao Geomuseum was discussed. More ¡­¡­.

   

3. Next Focus in Developing (January 1 - Febrary 29, 2012)

 
Earlier Years of Arctic and Antarctic Exploration on Stamps will be the main topic for next volum in development. This action is for remembering of 130 anniversary of the First International Polar Year (1st IPY 1882-1883), 80 Anniversary of the Second International Polar Year (2nd IPY 1922-1923), as well as 150 Anniversary of Birth of Dr. Fridtjof Wedel-Jarlsberg Nansen (1861 - 1930.), 100 Anniversary of Roald Amundsen(1872¡«1928)' Foots on the South Pole (1911), as well as great contribution from Richard Byrd (1888 ¨C 1957), Adolphus Washington Greely (1844 ¨C 1935), and several other experts. Hundreds of stemps on this topic recording the herocal history were nonated to the Lin Chao Geomuseum, these stamps were issued from the year of 1918 to 2011 from dozens of countries in the world, not only the history of earlier years of arctic and antarctic exploration, but multiple stamp arts in the world wide will be shown at the production of this action. .
